Pink playroom ideas that feel elegant

How we design pink, girly playrooms that feel soft and grown-up, and still let kids be kids.

Pink rooms are our favorite to design. The difference between a room that feels dreamy and one that feels loud comes down to a few choices.

1. Choose soft, dusty pinks

Ballet-slipper, blush and rose with a touch of gray or beige read as calm and sophisticated. Save the bright pinks for small accents like a cushion, a bow or a single chair.

2. Pair pink with grounding colors

  • Cream and warm white on trim, shelving and ceilings keep the room light.
  • Sage green feels like leaves on a rose and balances pink beautifully.
  • Natural wood and rattan add warmth and keep the room from feeling sugary.
  • A little gold or brass in a mirror, a lamp or drawer pulls adds polish.

3. Use one hero pink element

Pick one statement, such as a pink window seat, a scalloped bookcase, a floral wallpaper or a rose-print rug, and keep everything else quieter around it.

4. Add texture instead of more color

Bouclé, linen, velvet, wool and woven baskets make a pink room feel layered and rich without adding more pink.

5. Girly details, edited

Bows, butterflies, scallops and florals are what make a room feel magical. Choose two or three motifs and repeat them, rather than using all of them at once.

6. Make it practical

  • Choose washable paint and performance fabrics.
  • Use storage that hides the mess, such as closed cabinets and lidded baskets.
  • Anchor shelving and furniture to the wall.
  • Plan the big pieces to grow with her, and change the playful layers as she does.
