A playroom gets messy for one reason more than any other: there are more toys than homes for them. Organizing is really two jobs, deciding what stays and giving everything that stays a place your child can manage on her own.
1. Empty the room and sort by type
Take everything out and group it on the floor: blocks, vehicles, dolls and accessories, pretend food, art supplies, puzzles, games, books and stuffed animals. Sorting by how your child plays, not by size or color, makes clean-up intuitive later.
2. Edit before you buy a single bin
Set aside anything broken, missing pieces, outgrown or duplicated. Make four piles: keep, rotate, donate and toss. It's normal for a third or more of the toys to leave the room. Many of them will go into a toy rotation rather than out of the house.
3. Create zones
Divide the room into areas for different kinds of play, such as a reading nook, an art table, a building area with open floor space and a pretend-play corner. Zones tell a child what each part of the room is for, and they make it obvious where things go back.
4. Choose storage for the age, not the look
- Toddlers: open, low bins and baskets they can pull out and dump back into. Lids frustrate little hands.
- Preschoolers: open bins plus a few lidded containers for small parts such as beads and building pieces.
- School-age kids: lidded bins, drawers and shelves for collections, games and craft kits.
Keep daily favorites on the lowest shelves. Put things that need a grown-up, like paint, glitter and tiny pieces, up high.
5. Label everything
Use picture labels for children who can't read yet: a photo or simple drawing of what goes inside. Add the word underneath, so labels grow with your child as she learns to read.
6. Make it safe
Anchor bookcases, dressers and tall cubbies to the wall to prevent tip-overs. Keep small parts and button batteries away from children under three, and use toy boxes with lightweight lids or no lids at all.
7. Keep it up with a five-minute reset
A daily five-minute tidy, with a song or a timer, keeps the system working. If clean-up regularly takes longer than that, there are still too many toys out, and it's time to rotate some.
